Exhibition Dates: March 9 – April 30, 2007

Benfield Gallery is pleased to announce the installment of a new exhibition, “Gelatin Silver Print Photography” at Chartwell Golf and Country Club by nationally recognized photographer, Michael Kahn. The show will be held in the Club Dining Room from March 9 through April 30.

Preeminent photographer Michael Kahn has combined his two passions: photography and classic sailboats to create one of the most comprehensive and elegant portfolios of sailing vessels to date. At every opportunity, Michael will travel the world to capture unique and historic boats. These works have led him to create remarkable images from the Adirondack lakes, the Chesapeake Bay, and along the coast of New England.

“Like another great American master, Ansel Adams, Michael Kahn’s photographs distinguish themselves for their sureness of vision, richness of atmosphere and subtlety of surface”, praises Russell Jinishian, owner of J. Russell Jinishian Gallery and publisher of Marine Art Quarterly. Kahn prints his images using a process he developed over many years researching and working in the darkroom. His rich warm sepia toned images are unique and demonstrate his expertise as a fine printer. Cruising World magazine notes “It is unusual to see a photograph and instantly know who took the shot. With this hand-toned, gelatin silver print, the photographer can only be Michael Kahn.”

Michael Kahn’s photographs have appeared in publications throughout the United States and Europe including Forbes Life, Segeln, Fotoforum Magazine and Chesapeake Home. Kahn’s book, The Spirit of Sailing: A Celebration of Sea and Sail, feature over 80 of his exquisite photographs (Copies available at Benfield Gallery).

Personal Perspective, the photographs of Michael Kahn.

Carla Massoni Gallery Chestertown Maryland
April 14 2007 – May 12 2007
Artist Talk @ 2pm
Reception @ 2-5 pm

Renowned fine-art photographer Michael Kahn will be featured at the Carla Massoni Gallery, from April 14th to May 12th. The exhibit, titled Personal Perspective, will introduce a series of Kahn’s new black and white images and include a rare selection of color abstracts taken of the Eastern Shore. Out of the 3000 photographs that Kahn took in 2006 only 6 images have been chosen to be exhibited at the Carla Massoni Gallery this April.

Although Kahn is best known for his elegant black and white sepia toned images this assortment of color abstracts is yet another facet to his artistry. Over the past several years Kahn has strived to tell a unique story of the Eastern Shore by taking a new look at an old place. It is a look that encompasses the fading history, the modern day and the potential of the region, as Kahn reveals; “With the color abstracts I can tell the story of the Eastern Shore by revealing the patina and layers of its history”.

The show will open on Saturday April 14th with an artist talk at 2 pm and reception from 2 to 5pm. For more information please contact Carla Massoni at 410-778-7330.
